Koi Dynasty – Mamoru Kodama’s Enduring Legacy; Taro’s Inspiration

Mamoru Kodama, world-renown champion koi expert, has been a profound influence on Taro’s passion for Koi. The tradition continues within the family, as Mamoru has devoted his life to the art of creating these magnificent creatures, since he initiated the business in 1969.

Mamoru aka “Kaicho”, started his career as a researcher at Fresh Water Aquaculture Experimental Station of Aichi Pref., Japan. After 5 years, he founded Miyoshiike, a specialized dealer of Niigata Nishikigoi 40 years ago. He has won grand champion at All Japan Nishikigoi Shows 5 times and is recognized as having one of the top ‘eyes’ for Nishikigoi. A few of the famous Koi that he has dealt with are “Kohaku,” “Loran,” “Daiya no Kamen,” and many more.

In 1990, Mr. Kodama partnered with a company in Taiwan and he started teaching them the breeding of Koi. In 1993, he launched a breeding farm in Okinawa until 2000. The experience he gained in breeding Koi in a tropical climate inspired his decision to open a Koi farm in Hawaii.

In 2002, Mamoru published “Kokugyo Vol. 1,” the first ever English Koi book by a Japanese Koi dealer. The book is considered to be a bible among Koi lovers. In 2004, he published “Kokugyo Vol. 2 – Nishikigoi Development -.” Mr. Kodama received high commendations from oversea dealers and Koi lovers as a top-level Nishikigoi authority  is third book, “Koishi – Creators of Living Jewels” was released in June of 2010.

Recognizing the increasing demand for Japanese Koi beyond Japan, the Kodama family opted to establish a service station in the USA. In 2001, Taro relocated to California to supervise their latest venture, 

Taro Kodama  launched a website and  introduced an inventive online auction service, making it easier and more affordable for enthusiasts around the globe to acquire Japanese Koi.

In 2006, the Kodama Team decided to add a farm in Hawaii with 10 acres of Koi farm and renamed the business becoming KODAMA KOI FARM to improve their service to Koi lovers. There are about 40,000 imported Japanese Koi in 3.5 million gallons of water.
